Any business operating in British Columbia with a total workforce of 20 or more employees is legally required to establish a Joint Health and Safety Committee. Provincial regulations dictate that all appointed committee members must complete 8 hours of foundational OHS training through an external safety education provider. To ensure operational compliance and seamless meeting execution, maintaining a 6-member committee structure is highly recommended. This includes 2 management representatives and 4 employee representatives. While a minimum of 4 active members is required by provincial law to establish a voting quorum during official proceedings, training an additional 2 alternates ensures your committee never falls out of compliance due to scheduling conflicts or absences. Larger enterprises may require an expanded committee roster depending on total staff volume, organizational scale, and the physical number of active operational facilities.
